What Is More Important: Having a Degree or Experience?

If you just earned a degree in computer science, but possess little experience beyond an internship, don’t fret. Some companies prefer candidates with exposure to the latest technologies, compared to someone with experience in something now outdated. This rule applies to most technology disciplines.
On the other hand, in a vocational field, like construction or factory work, experience pretty much trumps all other factors. If you possess little to no experience in your field of choice, explore getting an apprenticeship before applying for a position. Also look for positions where the company is willing to train new hires.
A School’s Reputation Also Matters
Not all degrees are created equal – no matter the field. The reputation of the school also plays a role in a company deciding to interview you. Degrees and diplomas from for-profit fly-by-night schools simply aren’t as impressive as those from a larger institution.
Also, earning a degree while still working full-time impresses nearly all organizations. Companies want to hire employees who are driven and hardworking. Be sure to stress this kind of situation during an interview, if it applies to you.
Companies Want Tangible Experience
Employers who want experienced candidates tend to prefer those whose resume reflects the tangible impacts they made throughout their work history. This experience also needs to be compatible with the job requirements. Simply holding a full-time job for 10 years matters little if your experience isn’t what the company wants or needs.
